The Street Teacher - Discover New York - Again!

Our Tours and Services

The Street Teacher is a tour company headed by Bill Goodhart, an experienced and licensed tour guide and educator. As avid lovers of New York, he and his team can provide exciting excursions through this great city in many ways.

The focus of The Street Teacher and his team is walking tours, so I would like to list the Key Tours that are offered - and that you can request by name:

1. The City Survey - see the highlights:
   a. Walking and public transport
   b. By motor coach, van or limo.  These tours provide a broad overview for those who may never have seen New York; or those who have only a day or two in the city and want to see as much as possible; or those who are either beginning a longer stay in New York or are just arrived in New York on a more permanent basis and who want a more complete introduction.

Sights that should be seen (all things considered, circumstances permitting) should include:

A. Fifth Avenue
B. Central Park
C. The Statue of Liberty
D. The Empire State Building
E. Rockefeller Center
F. Times Square
G. The Financial District
H. Harlem
I. Lincoln Center
J. Greenwich Village - and more!

2. Neighborhood Walking Tours - about 2 hours

a. The Upper East Side   • The East 78th Street Walk - an exploration of a single street, from the East River to Fifth Avenue and Central Park, through time and it's people.     • Central Park - beginning at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, we shall begin our walk with an understanding that the Park is a work of art.

b. The Financial District - beginning at City Hall Park, we walk through lower Manhattan and see such sights as  • The Federal Reserve Bank of New York  • Wall Street and The New York Stock Exchange  • Trinity Church and St. Paul's Chapel  • The World Trade Center

c. Greenwich Village : Washington Square is the Center of the Village, and many walks begin right at the Washington Square Arch.  But did you know that the park was established in part to insure the continuation of the first foundation in the United States? The Village also has had many residents, from tobacco-growing Dutch governors who kept too much of the profits to themselves, to fashionable men and women about town, to artists and artisans who simply wanted a place to be themselves.  Come - let's explore!

d. A Mid-Town Excursion: This walk includes explorations of Fifth and Madison Avenues, and a few of their cross streets, through history and styles, and visits Grand Central Terminal as the hub of it all.

e. The Upper West Side - this tour begins at Columbus Circle, and may include travel on city buses or subways. This tour will see:
      • Lincoln Center
      • The Dakota
      • Significant brownstones
      • The American Museum of Natural History
      • Riverside Park
      • Columbia University*
      • The Cathedral of St. John the Divine*

*time permitting (if those sites are desired, others may be skipped)

f. The High Line and the Meatpacking District - This tour will take you to and through both the hippest new neighborhood in Manhattan and the newest and perhaps most popular and innovative park in the city - a veritable harbinger of the Greening of New York City.  Come see old New York right up against new, and hear stories of the struggle of living and working and now playing oh, so close together in New York!  And - learn where the Oreo came from!

New York City Walking Tours
If you really want to come face-to-face with New York, walking through it is the only way. Bill has intimate knowledge of the city's neighborhoods, and many of its inhabitants, so join him for a stroll through Manhattan and Brooklyn:

WALK MANHATTAN

Greenwich Village - Beginning at Washington Square, we explore the "campus" of NYU and and walk west to the charming neighborhoods of the West Village - old and new - and perhaps we will walk on The High Line (below left).

• The Lower East Side, Little Italy and Chinatown - From the East Village to the neighborhood of tenements famous for its Jewish heritage, and finally to the largest Chinese community in the U.S., we explore old New York - even as it becomes something new.

The Upper East Side -This walk will concentrate on the neighborhoods from 59th Street and Fifth Avenue on up to Carnegie Hill and about E. 91st. Street; some walks up and down avenues and cross streets is likely.

Central Park -This walk can be dependent on activities within the park, but in consultation with our travelers, The Street Teacher will explain and celebrate the largest work of art in the city.  Consider this a few hours in the best imagined landscape you could create.

City Hall, Wall Street, and the World Trade Center Site - City Hall and the Brooklyn Bridge are the starting point for many of our tours, and will include St. Paul's Church, the Trade Center site as well as the New York Stock Exchange, Bowling Green, and some wonderfully new buildings and parks.

Harlem - Because Harlem is almost a little city in itself right in Manhattan, The Street Teacher offers three ways explore:

1. The West Harlem Walk, including Hamilton Grange, City College, Trinity Cemetery, and Audubon Terrace and the Hispanic Society;

2.The Central Harlem Walk, including Strivers Row, Astor Row, the Apollo Theater and 125th Street, and the Mount Morris Park neighborhood; and finally

3. The Jumel Terrace and Sugar Hill Walk, which includes the Morris-Jumel Mansion, Sylvan Terrace, the homes of Paul Robeson, Babe Ruth (one of many in Manhattan!), as well as Aaron Burr and Duke Ellington

WALK BROOKLYN

• Williamsburg, and the Brooklyn Art Scene - We can also walk the Brooklyn Bridge to the area down under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass - DUMBO - and enjoy the spectacular views from the new Brooklyn Bridge Park and the new East River State Park as well as the intriguing buildings and galleries of this new neighborhood.

• Brooklyn Heights - We can walk the Brooklyn Bridge to Brooklyn Landing and Brooklyn Heights, enjoying the magnificent view of New York harbor from the Brooklyn Bridge, and of lower Manhattan from the Brooklyn Promenade.  We will explore the streets and alleys of New York's first "suburb," and may partake of its cuisine as well.  (We can reach Brooklyn Heights by subway as well.)

• Park Slope and Prospect Park - We will reach this neighborhood by subway, of course - but remembering all the while that Mayor Gaynor walked the four miles to City Hall every morning, and back every night to his home at 22 8th Avenue!  We have it easy! But this is perhaps one of the loveliest communities in New York, and right next to the "other" great park in New York City, Prospect Park.

OUR WALKING TOUR RATES: Walking tours are generally between 2 and 3 hours long, and are priced at $25 per person, with a two person minimum (Groups are limited to a maximum of 12 per guide.)
